Introducing the Phase8 Synthesizer
Unveiled at the recent NAMM 2026 event, the Phase8 synthesizer is the brainchild of acclaimed engineer Tatsuya “Tats” Takahashi, known for his work on the Minilogue and Volca series. This innovative instrument emerges from Korg’s experimental Berlin division, showcasing a novel approach to sound generation termed “Acoustic Synthesis.” Tats emphasized that the Phase8 aims to create an instrument that feels “organic” and “alive,” standing out in a saturated market of conventional synthesizers.
A Unique Hybrid Instrument
The Phase8 synthesizer is not your typical synth; it combines elements of traditional synthesizers with the acoustic charm of an electric kalimba. At its core, the instrument features eight chromatically tuned steel resonators, which can be swapped and tuned by the user. These resonators generate sound through electromagnetic stimulation, allowing for a diverse range of sonic possibilities.
- Physical interaction: Users can pluck, strum, or tap the resonators to create sound.
- Experimentation: Korg encourages users to place objects on the instrument to explore new textures and tones.
- Dynamic control: The Air slider enables users to enhance or dampen the acoustic response based on contact with the resonators.
Advanced Features for Creative Expression
The Phase8 is equipped with dedicated envelopes and velocity control for each resonator, alongside a polymetric step sequencer that supports both step programming and unquantized live recording. Musicians can store and recall sequences using eight memory slots, and a Shift knob allows for delayed triggers relative to the chosen tempo.
Automation is seamless, with the ability to record all controls across a sequence. The synthesizer offers three modulation types, including classic tremolo and two audio-rate, pitch-dependent styles, one of which can be harmonically quantized.
Connectivity and Pricing
In terms of connectivity, the Phase8 includes MIDI In/Out via 3.5mm TRS, USB MIDI, sync in/out, and a CV input, making it easy to integrate into a broader setup. Additionally, it features a ¼” audio output and a 3.5mm headphone jack for personal monitoring.
The Phase8 is priced at €959/$1149/£859 and is currently available for pre-order at select dealers, with the first units expected to ship in April.
